About Levey Day School

Brief History

Founded in 1952 as the Portland Hebrew Day School, Levey is proud to be the only Jewish day school north of Boston accredited by the State of Maine, and later by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in 2023.  Levey began a preschool program in 2024.

Diversity is Our Strength

Levey is a socio-economically and culturally diverse school.  Families of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds are active parts of our community.

Demographics

Levey students come from four counties in Maine, representing several towns and cities including Bowdoinham, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth, Durham, Freeport, Gorham, Gray, Portland, Saco, Scarborough, South Portland, Westbrook, Windham and Yarmouth.

We Love the Arts

The Arts are abundant in everything our students do and learn.  Performing arts, visual arts, and music are central to the core of our program.   Connections are often made with our Jewish history and culture classes and the arts.

In the Classroom

The Levey preschool is primarily made up of 3-5  year old students. In the lower school, we have Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms. We continue to grow our classrooms, and have started accepting applications through 3rd grade. We have expert teachers who are great partners with parents.

Family Involvement

Levey families are actively engaged partners with the school.  There is a vibrant Family Parent Association which holds frequent family get togethers at local parks and events - such as group adventures to Sea Dogs, Red Claws, and Mariners games, as well as ice skating, bowling, and hiking meet-ups.

The FPA also shows appreciation for teachers and staff throughout the school year.

Foreign Language

Hebrew Language instruction begins in Pre-Kindergarten and continues throughout student tenure at Levey.

We Love the Outdoors

Levey is proud to showcase Shalom Community Park, a brand-new outdoor space with spectacular equipment, sports courts, and natural grass areas for our children to play and discover.  Our students go outside for recess and other outdoor learning experiences in all sorts of weather.  We partner with our families to ensure that each child has rain and snow gear so our students are safe and ready to get fresh air, be active, and engage with the natural world.
